Overview

Youth hostel “De Zandpoort” is situated in the outskirts of the city but at a walking distance from the city centre.

The historical capital of the Netherlands has a rich cultural and architectural heritage and thanks to the fabulous city restorations and modernizations the last few years it has been substantially uprated.

Technopolis, the zoological garden of Plankendael and the Toy Museum have provided Mechelen the title of “most child friendly city”.

(1) As a non-member you can also acquire your membership through the special introductory offer. You will be allowed a stay at a hostel without a membership card. Instead you’ll receive a guest membership card and pay a supplement per overnight stay. In exchange you’ll get a “Welcome Stamp” on your guest card. Once you have 6 stamps on your card you’ll have acquired a valid international membership and you’ll enjoy the normal tariffs. 
Mind you, you’ll be a lot cheaper off if you become a HI-member, in which case you’ll get a discount voucher as well. Keep in mind that in some countries the supplement for a “Welcome Stamp” comes more expensive than in Flanders.

  • Children discounts for families.

    • Children under 3 stay free.

    • Children under 12 get a discount of ±20% for bed and breakfast and meals when accompanied by at least one adult.

  • Group tariffs are the same as the individual adult tariff.

    • groups must be in possession of a group membership card. 

    • Every 16th person of a group stays free.

Travel Guide

Car:

Mechelen is near the motorway A1/E19 (Brussels-Antwerp).
Take exit 9 or 10 in the direction of Mechelen-Centrum (centre) and then via the R16 ring-road direction Leuven or via the N26 direction Lier.
 The youth hostel is located at the crossing of the ring road and the N26 (Mechelen-Leuven).
